Perth Citizens Advice Bureau simply wouldn’t exist without our volunteers. Volunteers in the bureau work in a range of roles including generalist advisers, admin workers, IT support, social policy workers or board members. You don’t need to have qualifications or particular experience to become a volunteer. We are looking for people who are interested in learning how to help. Of course it helps if you are a good listener, have a genuine desire to help others and the ability to understand complex information and explain it to others.
In return, as a volunteer , you will receive full training for your role, with on-going training and support. You will be joining a great team from many different backgrounds but all with one thing in common – the desire to do something which is challenging and very rewarding.
All our training is free and we pay volunteers’ expenses for travelling to the bureau. All we ask in return is your time. We provide a comprehensive training programme to prepare people to become CAB advisers. Training involves classroom sessions (some will be full day 10am – 4pm) as well as shadowing more experienced advisers before trainees ‘go solo’ and advise on their own. Experience has shown that volunteering as an adviser requires a minimum commitment of 6 hours per week this can be one full day (10am – 4pm) or two half-days. This may seem like a lot, but we have found that this is the minimum required to become a proficient adviser and keep your knowledge up to date.
We aim to run 2 Adviser Training Programmes (ATPs) each year for volunteers who would like to become general advisers. Our first ATP of 2018 commences in January (now fully subscribed), with the next one planned for June 2018. In advance of the ATP we will hold an information event at the bureau (date to be confirmed), to give prospective volunteers the chance to find out a bit more about what is involved in volunteering with us as well as the opportunity to talk to some of our advisers and have a tour of the office.
